We do free roof inspections in Myrtle Grove and across New Hanover and Brunswick counties. Every one comes with photos and notes, so you can see what we saw without climbing up there yourself. Call (910) 228-8034 or request a free roof inspection. If you'd like to know how it works first, here's our roof inspection page.
Below is what we look at on a Myrtle Grove roof, what you get afterward, and when it's worth having someone take a look.
What we check on your roof
We start with whatever made you call. That might be a ceiling stain, missing shingles, worn flashing or a slope that's showing its age. Then we check the roof around it, so we find the cause instead of guessing.
That can include:
- The shingles themselves. Missing, lifted or damaged shingles are worth catching before the next storm.
- Flashing and transitions. Roof-wall joints, chimneys, valleys and metal-to-shingle edges are common trouble spots after wind and rain.
- Vents and pipe boots. A leak doesn't always start right above the stain. Water can get in at a roof detail, a transition, a flashing area, a roof vent or a pipe boot, or it can run along the slope before it shows up inside.
- Edges, valleys and gutters. We look at roof edges and valleys, and at gutters that overflow.
- Tree cover and low-slope sections. Trees hanging over the roof and flatter sections can change what we look at.
What we look at first depends on your property and what you've noticed. Wind exposure, salt air and the roof's age all play a part too.
What you get after the inspection
- Photos and notes. You see what we found, in photos and in our notes.
- A quote if you want one. We quote after the free inspection, and what happens next is up to you. There's no pressure to book work.
- Next steps, explained. If something needs fixing, we can talk through roof repair. If the roof is near the end of its life, we can walk you through roof replacement.
- A written report if you need one. A formal written report has a separate fee, based on time and roof specifications. We waive it if you go ahead with the agreed repair or replacement.
Why roof age matters in Myrtle Grove
Myrtle Grove isn't an incorporated town. It's an unincorporated community in southeastern New Hanover County, on Myrtle Sound. Snows Cut connects the sound to the Cape Fear River as part of the Intracoastal Waterway.
It has also grown. The census counted 8,875 residents in 2010 and 11,476 in 2020. Census Bureau estimates for 2020-2024 show:
- about 5,095 homes, roughly 89% of them single-family houses
- a median year built of 1997, meaning about half of homes were built that year or earlier
- about one in four homes built in the 1990s, and about half built between 1980 and 2009
- about 84% of occupied homes lived in by their owners
If you're not sure when your roof was last replaced, or what repairs were done before you bought the house, that's a good reason to have it looked at. A closer look lets you plan around the roof's real condition instead of guessing.
One local detail: New Hanover County governs the unincorporated parts of the county, and Wilmington has its own rules inside city limits. Whether a roof job needs a permit depends on the work, and we handle permits when they're required.
When to book a roof inspection
The National Roofing Contractors Association recommends roof inspections at least twice a year, preferably in spring and fall, and after severe weather such as a hurricane, tornado or hailstorm. The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
Other good times to book are when a roof is getting older and before you sell, so you know where things stand.
From the ground, watch for missing or lifted shingles, new stains on a ceiling, flashing that has moved, or gutters spilling over in the rain. Please don't climb onto the roof to check. That's what the inspection is for.
If a storm just came through, our guide to checking a roof after a storm covers what you can safely look at from the ground. If you're inside Wilmington city limits, our Wilmington roof inspection page is the better place to start, and other nearby communities are on our New Hanover County roofing page.
